Microsoft to Acquire Antivirus Technology From GeCAD Software

REDMOND, Wash. June 10, 2003 Microsoft Corp. today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire the intellectual property and technology assets of GeCAD Software Srl., a provider of antivirus technology based in Bucharest, Romania. Microsofts acquisition of GeCADs technology will help secure customers by providing antivirus solutions for Microsoft® products and services. In addition to developing new solutions, Microsoft will use the GeCAD engineering expertise and technology to enhance the Windows® platform and extend support for third-party antivirus vendors so they can provide customers with increasingly secure and comprehensive levels of virus protection. Worlds in Transition: IT in Eastern Europe

Only 15 years ago, we watched in amazement while the rusty iron curtain collapsed and the formerly communist countries of Eastern Europe embarked on new lives in the global market.
For most of us, this neglected region stretching from the Baltic to the Balkans then retreated to the fringes of our attention. Yet the region is very close to Western Europe, with a population of many millions — skilled and educated workers — and an entrepreneurial spirit fired by years of pent-up demand.

Until the 1980s, IT was quite primitive in most of the region. Then, fearing that delay would make the technology gap with the West impossible to bridge, the governments of Poland, Hungary and the former Czechoslovakia invested heavily in computer education. (more…)
